An interview with Sam Witwer (David Bloome), featuring in issue #33 of Smallville Magazine.

Davis Bloome was anything but a typical villain. There was no sneering, world-dominating master plan, or any sinister intention in his heart. Instead, Davis was a likeable paramedic who was first created on Krypton through genetic engineering and sent to Earth attached to Kal-El’s spaceship.

Unfortunately, his in-built violent tendencies surfaced during blackouts and caused him to perform unspeakable deeds as the rampaging Doomsday. Infamous for killing Superman in the comic books, the monstrous Doomsday became a more conflicted character in Smallville with the addition of his human-seeming alter ego. Actor Sam Witwer grappled with Davis’ whole nature-versus-nurture struggle throughout season eight, while trying to rally sympathy for the tormented character.

“The funny thing about Davis is that putting yourself in the mindset of someone struggling against this horrifying stuff is not that much fun,” offers Witwer. “The fun part is the challenge of making it believable and doing it justice. It’s a fun challenge in theory. Where the slack is also picked up is that the SMALLVILLE cast is so lovely and has such a great sense of humor, so in-between takes it’s really fun.”

Many of Smallville’s directors have praised Witwer for his presence and his input into Davis’ descent into darkness.

“See, I’m a pain in the ass on set!” laughs Witwer. “I have too many ideas. I sort of had some very specific ideas on how the character should be portrayed. The thing I kept campaigning for, and no one was in disagreement about this, was that Davis was a really good guy. He had this problem that he becomes this big gray guy with horns, but other than that, this is a guy who had tried his entire life to do the right thing. In every point where they had him doing something that was edging toward villainous or self-serving, I tried to pull it back. If Davis was going to freak out on someone or do something ugly like in the last two episodes, I wanted that to be difficult for him. None of this was easy for Davis. You have to create a believable point of view and stick to it. I’ve been trying to be Davis’ champion when it comes to his point of view.”

Introduced in Plastique, where he helped troubled teenager Bette recover after a bus explosion, Davis obviously made a strong impression on Chloe. The two became fast friends, and she even called on him for help when Oliver Queen was poisoned in Toxic. However, along the way, Davis’ emotions intensified to a level that frequently bordered on obsession.

“Everyone has an opinion on this, and no one is right or wrong,” says Witwer. “My personal take on their relationship is that Davis did have real feelings for Chloe. Those got magnified unnaturally when he realized she was sort of a cure for him. Chloe was the only chance in town for any kind of normalcy for this guy. Any peace of mind or [chance of a] normal life that he had left was facilitated by her. Davis became dependent on her.”

The season finale featured a climatic confrontation between Clark and Doomsday and even though black kryptonite separated the ‘ultimate destroyer’ from his human shell, quelling Davis’ own inner demons was not so easy. All his anger and rage flared up when Chloe professed her love for Jimmy, and as a result, Davis killed him by thrusting a steel bar through his chest.

“That was really tough for me,” admits Witwer. “I had to justify some stuff I didn’t necessarily agree with, but at the same time, it’s not really for me to say. If you’re on a show like SMALLVILLE and the producers are kind enough to hear you out when you have objections – which they have been – that’s great. A lot of shows aren’t like that. A lot of shows just want the actors to say their lines. The producers on Smallville are much more generous and want to hear what we have to say. At the end of the day, if you still disagree, your job is to say those lines and give the best performance possible. I had some difficulty with it, but I think it turned out well. Director James Marshall seemed happy with what I did, so I hope it came off well. All I ever wanted to do with this show is a good job. I did email James with some concerns I had with my performance and he just told me ‘Hey, man. Relax. I love what you did. I’ll take care of you in the editing room.’ My personal opinion is Davis wouldn’t have killed Jimmy. But again, it’s not for me to say.”

An interview with Cassidy Freeman (Tess Mercer), featuring in issue #32 of Smallville Magazine.

When Michael Rosenbaum announced he wouldn’t be reprising his role as Lex Luthor for SMALLVILLE‘s eighth season, loyal fans were crushed and concerned about who would be taking over as the show’s resident bad boy. The answer came in the form of someone who was far from a boy – Lex’s ambitious protégé, Tess Mercer, a femme fatale appointed as head of LuthorCorp, resident of the Luthor mansion, and owner and publisher of the Daily Planet. Filling Rosenbaum’s posh leather shoes was Cassidy Freeman, and while she immediately wowed viewers, the beautiful actress had already earned a seal of approval from her comic book-reading siblings long before a single episode aired.

“Not only does SMALLVILLE revolve around an iconic super hero, but Clark is also my younger brother’s name, so we used to call him ‘Superman’ growing up,” reports Freeman. “I think he might have a pair of Superman [underoos]. They were both very excited, and I specifically remember my eldest brother pulling me aside and talking about the mythology with me. I was pleased to have my own [walking] encyclopedia!”

That personal database must have come in handy when Tess bumped into established DC Comics villains such as Maxima and the human bomb, Plastique. There’s certainly never been a shortage of colorful individuals in SMALLVILLE, but it was Tess’ run-in with a Faora-possessed Lois Lane in Bloodline that confirmed her suspicions that extraterrestrial life existed.

“It’s funny you chose that specific thing,” says Freeman. “I liked that one of Tess’ first unearthly encounters was with Lois. It sparked her curiosity. She’d had these files of Lex’s for so long, and I thought she would be reading them wondering whether they were real, as opposed to being fabricated or in Lex’s mind due to his obsession with Clark. That particular encounter with Lois was the first time Tess realized things are happening that are not normal.”

In Turbulence, Tess and Clark have some alone time on her private jet where, for reasons known only to her, she decides to confide in him.

“Everything with Tess Mercer is calculated,” acknowledges Freeman. “She knows exactly what she’s doing. The fact of the matter is she’s inching closer and closer to finding out that Clark is special and has powers. She wants him to come to her. Every other person in Clark’s life that has found out about his powers, other than someone close, has tried to corner him into confessing he has these powers and he’s never admitted it. Tess takes the tactic of getting Clark to trust her and that she’s not the same person as Lex. If he knows I’m on his side, maybe he’ll come to me, in which case, he will be the first man in my life who does the right thing. That’s what she really wants. It’s not that she’s in love with Clark, which is the strange thing about her. She has all these relationships with people, but what she wants is to be loved in a way that has nothing to do with sex, but with consistency and trust. Tess needs a hero, which is what the plane [incident] is about. She’s testing Clark. Tess initiates this whole do or die scenario. She thinks her life isn’t as important as figuring out the answer to this question. There’s a moment on the plane where she believes she might be wrong and is therefore screwed.”

There’s plenty of tension and turmoil in Tess’ life, but scenes that always seem to stick out for Freeman are those light-hearted moments that deserve to land on a blooper reel.

“You can imagine in Turbulence when I got to the plane we shot in,” smiles Freeman. “I was like, ‘So is the plane going to rumble?’ They explained they had a shaky device attached to the camera and that I’d have to act like I was falling around. You can imagine this stable fake plane, with fans blowing in all directions, and then Tom and I inside of it with weird lights and oxygen masks coming down. There’s the two of us yelling at each other for no reason and we’re fake falling around each other. That’s one of those moments where you just have to let go of any embarrassment and go for it.”

The CW Joins Forces with Virgin America for Series Following the Lives of Jet-Setting Flight Attendants
“Fly Girls” is The CW Network’s new reality docu-series that takes a 360-degree look at the lives of the charismatic jet-setting flight attendants on America’s hippest new airline: Virgin America. The series will debut midseason on The CW.

“This show is about real, down-to-earth young women who happen to have landed in an exceptionally glamorous, high-flying career filled with exotic locations and handsome strangers,” said Kristen Vadas, Senior Vice President, Alternative Programming, The CW.  “We’re thrilled to be working with Virgin America for this unique peek into a whirlwind lifestyle that shows how tough it is to be grounded when you work 35,000 feet in the air.”

Over the course of eight half-hour episodes, five beautiful Virgin America flight attendants jet from one glamorous location to the next, including Las Vegas, South Beach and New York City, while pursuing good times, great parties, adventure and love.  From their shared home-base “crash pad” in Los Angeles, California, the young women will deal with work lives that include split-second decision-making, demanding and sometimes fascinating passengers, long hours in the air and layovers in interesting locales.  Their personal lives are filled with romance, family, friendships and more than a few roommate conflicts.

“Since Virgin America launched, we’ve reinvented the experience of flying with beautifully designed mood-lit cabins, concierge-like service and a hip, sophisticated vibe that today’s travelers are looking for,” said Porter Gale, Vice President of Marketing at Virgin America.  “We’re thrilled to work with The CW to show how our in-flight teammates are re-writing the script and bringing the style and fun back to flying.”

“Fly Girls” is from Collins Avenue Productions, with executive producers Jeff Collins (“Bridezilla 5,” “The Exterminators”) and Colin Nash (“The Hills,” “The City”) and co-executive producers Larry Bond and Porter Gale.
