Jensen Ackles and mystery girl elope to Las Vegas, then jet off to Africa to adopt quintuplets! Okay, that never happened. But we could say it did and Jensen Ackles wouldn’t even notice. When The Official Supernatural Magazine caught up with Ackles on his hiatus between seasons four and five, the laidback actor didn’t seem too worried that the tabloids might be having a field day with his private life. “You know what,” he said, “I’m sure that there is that kind of stuff out there, but I try not to pay attention to Us Weekly, OK! Magazine, The National Enquirer, chatrooms, blogs, and all that stuff. Besides, they’ve got bigger fish to fry – they’re not worried about me. I’m up here in Vancouver doing a CW show, so I think that they’re more interested in things like Dancing with the Stars.”
The shocking truth has come out: Jared Padalecki, raised by adoptive human parents, is actually the secret lovechild of a Sasquatch and an alien! Okay, that’s not true, either. But, again, we could do a full article with doctored photos and everything, and Padalecki would be none the wiser. “I actually do not read about myself,” he revealed. “I try to stay away from it. When I first started acting and I was on Gilmore Girls, I was reading something, and read, ‘I think Jared just sucks. I think he looks like a little kid.’ So I was like, ‘Ahh!’ And from then on out I just stopped reading that stuff. I stay away.”
Clearly the Supernatural stars did not spend their hiatus catching up on the latest celebrity gossip, so what have they been up to? “Just seeing my family, seeing my friends, and relaxing,” Padalecki said. “Season four was a big season. It was a really tough year. The best writing of all four years so far, but it was really intense. It was really emotional and it took a lot out of us. The loss of Kim Manners and a few other hits that the show took made it a really long and hard season, so I needed a vacation.”
Another way to remember Manners is to re-watch the episode Sex and Violence and keep an eye out for his cameo as an extra in the strip club scene. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why Padalecki specifically brought up that episode as one of his favorites of season four. “I really liked watching Sex and Violence,” he said. “I didn’t know what I’d feel about it, but watching it, I really enjoyed it. I actually watched it with Jensen. It was fun, scary, and cool. There were some really cool shots and some good action. And there was Sam and Dean fighting, which is always kind of a fun thing. That one sticks out in my head, for sure.
“I really liked In the Beginning,” admitted Padalecki. Since that episode focused on Dean time-travelling alone, Padalecki got to take a week off. “I went to Maui! I just hopped on a flight and got out of there. That was nice. It’s so funny, though, because every now and again Jensen and I will get a day off, or we’ll have a half-day off, or we’ll have a three-day weekend or something, and the joke that we have with each other is that we don’t even know what to do with ourselves. We’re kind of sitting there going, ‘Uhh… should I be working? What should I do?’ We beg and plead for a day off and then when a day off comes we don’t even know what to do because they’re so rare. We just try to rest and relax and stay low-key.”
If you thought you could get Ackles to curse Padlecki’s good fortune, you’d be wrong. “I was happy for him,” Ackles insisted. “The thing is, Jared and I work so much, so I know that if I’m working alone that he’s getting some time off or if he’s working alone then I’m getting some time off. Even though it sucks that we’re pulling all the weight one day or one week or whatever, it’s like, ‘Well, alright man, at least you’re getting some time off because I know you need it.’ It’s all good.”
Ackles is also looking forward to season five. “I think season four was our best season, both with the storylines and the ratings, but we’ve got another one coming…” he said, his grin implying that he expects season five to be the best yet. Ackles has mentioned many times before that he no longer tries to predict what Eric Kripke will do, so all he’ll say on the subject of season five is that continuing to work on Supernatural is “a good job to have!”
