THE CW AND CBS MOBILE ANNOUNCE THE LAUNCH OF TWO NEW CW APPS FOR iPHONE AND iPOD TOUCH

“CW City Wize” Mobile Guide Helps Fans Find Hot Spots and Locations Seen on Hit Series GOSSIP GIRL, 90210 and the All-New MELROSE PLACE
“CWTV” Application Delivers Direct Mobile Access to Video Clips of All CW Shows Including Previews, Recaps, Cast Interviews and Behind-The-Scenes Footage

The CW Network and CBS Mobile today announced the launch of two new CW applications on the iTunes App Store that allow users to watch short-form videos and engage with their favorite CW shows and characters.

The “CW City Wize” application, sponsored by Target, is a mobile city guide that provides CW fans with maps that highlight actual locations seen or talked about on The CW’s hit shows GOSSIP GIRL, 90210 and the all-new MELROSE PLACE.  Various locales displayed on the app will also feature video clips from these three respective shows. In addition, viewers can map locations and read reviews of favorite hot spots — restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels and shopping — within the cities where the shows take place: New York City, Beverly Hills and Hollywood.

The “CWTV” application gives CW fans direct access to video clips of all CW programming, including previews, recaps, interviews with the cast, and behind-the-scenes footage of popular CW shows. Fans can also link out to iTunes to purchase full length episodes of GOSSIP GIRL, 90210, MELROSE PLACE, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, ONE TREE HILL, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, SUPERNATURAL, and SMALLVILLE.

“The CW is proud to have some of the most passionate fans in all of television, and we’re thrilled to offer them an imaginative way to further immerse themselves into the world of their favorite shows, wherever and however they want with our new ‘CW City Wize’ and ‘CWTV’ apps,” said Rick Haskins, Executive Vice President of Marketing and Brand Strategy, The CW Network. “These fun and engaging mobile offerings allow us to further extend The CW brand into this vibrant platform and also enhance the TV experience for the fans of our shows.”

“We are excited to deliver CW fans innovative new ways to get engaged with hit shows like GOSSIP GIRL and MELROSE PLACE – much the way sports fans do through their fantasy teams,” said Randy Ahn, VP, Entertainment & Sports, CBS Mobile. “With the City Wize app, fans can literally walk in the steps of their favorite characters – visit the hottest restaurants, shop at the trendiest stores and view the actual locations where scenes from hit CW shows were taped.  Fans also get unique access to CW programming thorough the CWTV app, including an extensive photo gallery, detailed searches, and schedules for their favorite shows, all through their iPhone or iPod touch.”

The “CW City Wize” application includes these features:

  • Mapping: Users from across the U.S. can access maps displaying actual locations where scenes from specific CW shows are shot, and several locales will feature accompanying video clips from the show. Locations are updated as each new episodes airs.
  • Hot Spots:  Maps include a list of the top restaurants, bars, clubs, hotels and shopping in the featured areas.  Additionally, specific hot spot locations offer “perks” or special offerings—including anything from 10% off a meal to a free dessert.
  • Database of High End Locations and Reviews: The application features an extensive database of high-end locations, full reviews and information which can be filtered by category.
  • Bookmark Feature: For CW fans planning on visiting New York City, Beverly Hills or Hollywood, the bookmark feature stores saved locations to visit during their trip.

The “CWTV” application includes these features:

  • Clips of All CW Shows: The “CWTV” application delivers video clips of all current CW programming, including previews, recaps, and behind-the-scenes footage of popular CW shows. Users can also dig deeper into their favorite shows through full photo galleries featuring cast members and scenes, and interviews with the cast, directly from their iPhone and iPod touch.
  • CWTV Schedule: The CWTV schedule provides up-to-the-minute air times and dates for all CW programming. Users can also keep track of their favorite CW shows through episode summaries and details of each episode’s air-date.
  • Create a Customized “Feed”: Users are able to create a custom video feed based on their favorite CW content.
  • Share with Friends: The “CWTV” application makes it easy to share videos and photos with others.
  • Purchase Full Length Episodes from iTunes: Fans can also link out to iTunes to purchase full length episodes of GOSSIP GIRL, 90210, MELROSE PLACE, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES, ONE TREE HILL, AMERICA’S NEXT TOP MODEL, SUPERNATURAL and SMALLVILLE.

The “CW City Wize” and “CWTV” applications are now available for free from the iTunes App Store on iPhone and iPod touch.

CBS Mobile partnered with BlackBook Media Corp. to develop the CW City Wize application and Rhythm NewMedia to develop the CWTV application.

Jensen Ackles and mystery girl elope to Las Vegas, then jet off to Africa to adopt quintuplets! Okay, that never happened. But we could say it did and Jensen Ackles wouldn’t even notice. When The Official Supernatural Magazine caught up with Ackles on his hiatus between seasons four and five, the laidback actor didn’t seem too worried that the tabloids might be having a field day with his private life. “You know what,” he said, “I’m sure that there is that kind of stuff out there, but I try not to pay attention to Us Weekly, OK! Magazine, The National Enquirer, chatrooms, blogs, and all that stuff. Besides, they’ve got bigger fish to fry – they’re not worried about me. I’m up here in Vancouver doing a CW show, so I think that they’re more interested in things like Dancing with the Stars.”

The shocking truth has come out: Jared Padalecki, raised by adoptive human parents, is actually the secret lovechild of a Sasquatch and an alien! Okay, that’s not true, either. But, again, we could do a full article with doctored photos and everything, and Padalecki would be none the wiser. “I actually do not read about myself,” he revealed. “I try to stay away from it. When I first started acting and I was on Gilmore Girls, I was reading something, and read, ‘I think Jared just sucks. I think he looks like a little kid.’ So I was like, ‘Ahh!’ And from then on out I just stopped reading that stuff. I stay away.”

Clearly the Supernatural stars did not spend their hiatus catching up on the latest celebrity gossip, so what have they been up to? “Just seeing my family, seeing my friends, and relaxing,” Padalecki said. “Season four was a big season. It was a really tough year. The best writing of all four years so far, but it was really intense. It was really emotional and it took a lot out of us. The loss of Kim Manners and a few other hits that the show took made it a really long and hard season, so I needed a vacation.”

Another way to remember Manners is to re-watch the episode Sex and Violence and keep an eye out for his cameo as an extra in the strip club scene. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why Padalecki specifically brought up that episode as one of his favorites of season four. “I really liked watching Sex and Violence,” he said. “I didn’t know what I’d feel about it, but watching it, I really enjoyed it. I actually watched it with Jensen. It was fun, scary, and cool. There were some really cool shots and some good action. And there was Sam and Dean fighting, which is always kind of a fun thing. That one sticks out in my head, for sure.

“I really liked In the Beginning,” admitted Padalecki. Since that episode focused on Dean time-travelling alone, Padalecki got to take a week off. “I went to Maui! I just hopped on a flight and got out of there. That was nice. It’s so funny, though, because every now and again Jensen and I will get a day off, or we’ll have a half-day off, or we’ll have a three-day weekend or something, and the joke that we have with each other is that we don’t even know what to do with ourselves. We’re kind of sitting there going, ‘Uhh… should I be working? What should I do?’ We beg and plead for a day off and then when a day off comes we don’t even know what to do because they’re so rare. We just try to rest and relax and stay low-key.”

If you thought you could get Ackles to curse Padlecki’s good fortune, you’d be wrong. “I was happy for him,” Ackles insisted. “The thing is, Jared and I work so much, so I know that if I’m working alone that he’s getting some time off or if he’s working alone then I’m getting some time off. Even though it sucks that we’re pulling all the weight one day or one week or whatever, it’s like, ‘Well, alright man, at least you’re getting some time off because I know you need it.’ It’s all good.”

Ackles is also looking forward to season five. “I think season four was our best season, both with the storylines and the ratings, but we’ve got another one coming…” he said, his grin implying that he expects season five to be the best yet. Ackles has mentioned many times before that he no longer tries to predict what Eric Kripke will do, so all he’ll say on the subject of season five is that continuing to work on Supernatural is “a good job to have!”

An interview with Eric Kripke, featured in issue #12 of Supernatural  Magazine.

The Official Supernatural Magazine: How did you feel when the decision was made that you’d be directing the season finale?

Eric Kripke: I felt a really intense amount of pressure to make the episode great. Because it was the finale, I knew how large the scope and size of the episode were going to be, how epic it needed to feel. On top of that, there was the added pressure that it was the first finale that Kim Manners hadn’t shot, and obviously Kim had decades of experience and knew how to handle episodes of this size, and I had directed a total of one other episode of television besides this. So I have to say I felt quite nervous and very stressed, and I felt the pressure to live up to the standards that Kim set.

Did you pay homage to Kim in the way you shot the episode?

EK: I definitely felt like Kim was on my shoulder as I was going through my shot design. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I asked myself several times, “What would Kim do here?” There’s this Kim Manners characteristic close-up, which is this really tight close-up that kind of cuts off the chin and the forehead, and I found myself using that close-up a lot, sometimes consciously, sometimes unconsciously, but I think I did it because I wanted it to feel like a Kim Manners finale in some ways.

The first Supernatural episode you directed was written by Raelle Tucker. Was it better or worse to be working off your own script this time?

EK: Mostly it made a difference for the worse, because when it’s somebody else’s script
I have the advantage of being able to, as head writer, rewrite it to my taste and make any changes I want to make. Then if the episode didn’t turn out or wasn’t very good, for whatever reason, I could always blame that other writer. [Laughs] But on this one, I really felt like I was standing out there without any cover; I felt if this one didn’t work, there’s only one person to take the blame and that’s me, so I ended up feeling a bit more pressured.

Do you have any fun behind-the-scenes stories about working with Jared and Jensen on Lucifer Rising? Did the infamous pranksters try to pull anything over on you?

EK: Maybe everyone was tired at the end of the year or maybe everyone wanted to be on their good behavior because I was in town, but there were actually no pranks. Everyone showed up really prepared, ready to play. There’s a lot of joking around, and a lot of the jokes were off-color, but there were no practical jokes.

Well, causing the apocalypse is no joke, that’s for sure. Was it always your intention to have the boys fail to stop Lucifer from rising?

EK: Yeah, there was always a plan to raise Lucifer by the end of the season.

Overall, how was the experience of returning to directing?

EK: I have to say that I really had a lot of fun up there. Once you get on set and start working, it really is a blast. It really is so much more fun than writing. Going into it, I was really sweating it. I knew because it was the finale, it was gonna be huge, it was gonna be hard to get done on schedule, we were going to have to rush through it. There were things in this episode like ratchet poles that pulled the stuntwoman back and all sorts of other things that I’d never done before and had no experience with, and so much more CGI and visual effects than I had to deal with last time. The fact that I was the writer meant I felt the added pressure to make sure the script was really great. So all that weighed pretty hard on me. I probably averaged about three, three-and-a-half hours of sleep a night. I subsisted the first week and a half on a diet of dried toast because my stomach was too nervous to process anything else. It was intense, but once I got past the initial butterflies, I had the time of my life!
